Co-director with Basel Adra, No Other Land, Oscar winner, Best Documentary Feature Film, 97th Academy Awards.
The Palestinian-Israeli collective film, the first Palestinian film to win an Oscar, documents Palestinian resistance against the brutal Israeli military occupation and land theft in Masafer Yatta, a village in the West Bank.
“In two days, we will go back to a land where we are not equal. I am living under civilian law, and Basel (Adra, Palestinian co-director) is under military law. We live 30 minutes from one another. . . This situation of apartheid between us, this inequality, it has to end.” — Acceptance speech, co-director, best documentary No Other Land,74th Berlin International Film Festival, Berlin, Germany, February 24, 2024
(On January 25, 2025, two days after the film was nominated for an Oscar, settler colonialists broke into and burned Palestinian homes in Masafer Yatta.)
Oscar acceptance speech for Best Documentary Film:
“We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together our voices are stronger . . .
“When I look at (Palestinian co-director) Basel (Adra), I see my brother. But we are unequal. We live in a regime where I am free under civilian law, and Basel is under military laws that destroy his life, and he cannot control.
“There is a different path: a political solution without ethnic supremacy, with national rights for both of our people. And I have to say, as I am here (in the United States): The foreign policy in this country is helping to block this path. . .”
